A Big Berkey Water Filter – Cheaper Than Bottled Water.
If you buy bottled water STOP! Seriously, you are throwing money away.
YES, you want clean, untainted water but there is no need to pay through the nose for it and deal with the inconvenience of carting heavy bottles home from the store and cluttering up the house storing them.
I don’t know how you feel, but I’m certainly not comfortable with the enormous resource waste that bottled water represents either.
If you feel that tap water isn’t an option due to it’s unpleasant taste or more importantly its fluoride (to learn more about the dangers of fluoridated water start here) and chemical residue content, then a better and less expensive alternative to bottled water is water that you filter at home.
Bottled water manufactures spend a fortune advertising their products and why wouldn’t they, since the industry is worth $22 billion annually in the US alone. But don’t be fooled by images of mountain springs, some of those bottled water brands are nothing more than plain old tap water.
Filtering your water at home requires an initial investment in equipment and ongoing replacement of filters but it still works out way, way cheaper than buying bottled water.
The filter that we use is the Berkey Filter
Water For Less Than Five Cents A Gallon
Benefits Of A Berkey Water Purifier
- Pure water for pennies per gallon
- High efficiency – A Berkey filter will remove water borne pathogens and toxic chemicals
- Gravity fed – no power needed
- Stand alone – no plumbing required
- Durable & stylish unit. A high grade polished 304-stainless steel looks good and lasts a long time
- Filters have an easily cleaned outer surface for prolonged life
In the first year the cost of the water is higher because you have the cost of the unit itself, but in subsequent years you only have the replacement filter costs.
Berkey Water Filter systems are available in several sizes enabling you to choose the one which is most suited to your needs.
The Berkey Filter is comprised of an upper chamber, where you add the unfiltered water, a lower chamber that holds the clean filtered water and the filter cartridges.
The filters come in two types. The Black Berkey filters and the Super Sterasyl filters. See current models:
Fluoride & Arsenic Filter – This is an additional filter that you’ll need to purchase if you want to remove fluoride from your tap water.
Personally I use the Big Berkey system with 2 Black filter cartridges. This size works well for our family of five and gives us plenty of water for drinking and cooking. We fill the chamber twice a day filtering 4.5 gallons a day and replace the filters every two years.
At current prices ($258) a Big Berkey System with 2 Black Filters will produce superb drinking water that costs just 4.5 cents per gallon.
When it’s time to replace your filters – current cost $107 for 2 – the next 6000 gallons of water costs even less at just 1.8 cents per gallon.
It doesn’t matter which grocery or big box store you shop at you will not find purified water at anywhere near these prices.
